Sony responds to Microsoft's invite to let Xbox gamers play PS4 players

Microsoft announced earlier this week that it plans to allow Xbox gamers to play against PS4 and PC players. The software giant is opening up its platform to developers to choose whether they will support cross-network play, but it will also require Sony to support it on the company's PlayStation Network. Sony has now responded to Microsoft's invite, indicating that it might be open to the idea.
SONY IS WILLING TO TALK TO DEVELOPERS
"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002," notes a statement from Sony to GameSpot. "We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."
Sony's response doesn't directly address whether it would work with Microsoft and developers to enable the support for Xbox One vs. PS4, but it's clear the firm will listen to developers who are interested in cross-network play. Either way, Sony could have chosen to stay silent so a response is encouraging. The dream of Xbox gamers playing against PS4 players might finally become a reality.
It's still too early to say how many developers will opt for Microsoft's new cross-network play. Rocket League will be one of the first titles to support the new cross-network play, but we might have to wait until E3 in June to hear about additional games. Sony notes it has been supporting cross-platform play between the PlayStation and PC for more than 10 years, but any move to link the Xbox and PlayStation would be a first for both Sony and Microsoft
